VRM lookup is the single fastest way to reduce data entry in a UK garage. Type the registration, get the make, model, year, fuel type, MOT status and tax status. No asking the customer, no checking the V5C, no typing "Ford Focus" for the four-hundredth time.
This guide covers what the lookup returns, how garages use it, and why it matters for accuracy as much as speed.
What VRM lookup returns
The DVLA's Vehicle Enquiry Service returns the following for any vehicle registered in Great Britain:
- Make and model (e.g. Ford Focus)
- Year of manufacture
- Colour
- Fuel type (petrol, diesel, electric, hybrid)
- Engine capacity (cc)
- CO2 emissions
- Tax status (taxed, SORN, not taxed)
- Tax due date
- MOT status (valid, expired, no MOT)
- MOT expiry date
- Date of first registration
It does not return the owner's name, address, VIN, mileage or service history. Owner data is protected and not available through the public API.
For the full MOT history including test results, mileage readings and defects, a separate lookup through the DVSA MOT history API is needed.
How garages use VRM lookup
At the front desk
A customer calls to book a service. The receptionist asks for the registration, types it in, and the system fills in the vehicle details. The booking is created with the correct make, model and year without the customer having to spell it out and without the receptionist having to interpret what "the silver Audi, the new one" means.
On the job card
When a job is created, the registration lookup populates the vehicle details on the digital job card. The technician sees the correct engine size, fuel type and MOT status before walking to the ramp. If the MOT is due within a month, the system can flag it.
For quoting
A garage quote with the wrong vehicle details is worse than useless. If the customer has two cars and the quote goes out for the wrong one, the price may be wrong, the parts may be wrong, and the approval is for work on a car you are not expecting. VRM lookup prevents this class of error.
For MOT reminders
The MOT expiry date from the VRM lookup feeds into MOT reminder systems. When a customer's car comes in for any work, the system notes the MOT expiry and adds them to the reminder list if the expiry is approaching.
The DVLA API
The DVLA provides the Vehicle Enquiry Service as a free API for software developers. It returns JSON with the same data as the GOV.UK lookup page. Registration and acceptance of the terms is required. The API is rate-limited but the limits are generous enough for workshop use.
Our DVLA vehicle lookup guide covers the API in detail, including what it returns, its limitations, and how to combine it with the DVSA MOT history API for the full picture.
Why accuracy matters more than speed
The speed benefit of VRM lookup is obvious: seconds instead of minutes per job. The accuracy benefit is less visible but more valuable.
A customer whose car is booked in as a 2019 Focus 1.0 EcoBoost rather than a 2019 Focus 1.5 TDCi will receive a quote for the wrong engine. The parts will be wrong. The labour estimate may be wrong. The error cascades from the first data entry mistake through the entire job.
VRM lookup removes this class of error entirely. The data comes from the DVLA, not from the customer's memory or the receptionist's typing. It is correct every time, which means the quote is for the right car, the parts order is for the right engine, and the invoice matches the work.

Common questions
What does a VRM lookup return?
A VRM lookup through the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service returns the make, model, colour, fuel type, engine size, year of manufacture, tax status, MOT status and MOT expiry date. It does not return the owner's name, address or the VIN.
Is the DVLA VRM lookup free?
The DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service is free for individual lookups on GOV.UK. The API for software developers is also free, but requires registration and is subject to rate limits and acceptable use terms.
Can a garage look up who owns a vehicle from the registration?
No. The DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service does not return owner details. Garages cannot look up who owns a vehicle from the registration alone. Owner information is only disclosed to parties with a reasonable cause, such as law enforcement or parking enforcement companies.
What does VRM stand for?
VRM stands for Vehicle Registration Mark. It is the official term for the registration number (number plate) assigned to a vehicle registered in the UK.
